To earn the seal, a brand has to run controlled clinical trials following VOHC's protocols, then submit the data for review.

It checks the exact claim
VOHC doesn't hand out a general seal of approval. It reviews specific claims, like controlling plaque or controlling tartar, and a product is accepted only for the claim its data supports.
That means "accepted for plaque control" tells you exactly what the product was proven to do.
Why it matters: no vague promises. You know what it does, not just what it hopes to do.
It's specific to your cat
Cats aren't small dogs. Their mouths, habits, and the way they eat and drink are different.
VOHC acceptance is given per species, so a product accepted for cats was proven in cats. A dog result doesn't count.
